Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a time-limited, structured approach that focuses on improving interpersonal functioning to alleviate mental health symptoms, primarily depression. It operates under the premise that psychological symptoms are often intertwined with difficulties in relationships and social interactions. IPT centers on identifying and addressing current interpersonal issues, such as role transitions (e.g., becoming a parent, experiencing a significant loss), interpersonal disputes, grief and loss, and social isolation.
Through a collaborative process, the therapist assists the individual in understanding how their emotions and behaviors impact their relationships and vice versa. IPT emphasizes communication skills, problem-solving strategies, and developing healthy social support networks to improve interpersonal functioning and alleviate depressive symptoms.
