In Texas, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is a mental health professional who provides a wide range of counseling services to individuals, couples, families, and groups. They are licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors and are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat various mental, emotional, and behavioral health concerns.
LPCs utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family systems therapy, to help clients develop coping mechanisms, improve emotional regulation, and enhance their overall well-being. Among other areas, they address issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship problems, and substance abuse.
To become an LPC in Texas, individuals must complete a master’s degree in counseling (or related field) from an accredited university/college, accumulate supervised clinical experience, and pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the Texas Jurisprudence Examination.
